'Akohekohe are currently found only above 3,500 ft. on the northeastern slopes of east Maui in wet forests dominated by 'Ohi'a. Their former range was probably much larger than this, but mosquitoes and other threats have greatly reduced their range. Dedicated mangers from the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project spend a considerable amount of time studying ways to help recover this and other rare Hawaiian Forest bird species.
