This painting is the result of a hike to the Fleming Arboretum at Pu'u Mahoe. The Loulu palm is a native endemic (Maui origin) of 'Eke crater and the tree in the background is an extremely rare Alani (Melicope knudsenii) with rust on its branches. The leaves have spiritual significance and are much valued by Hawaiians in making woven hats.
