On the slope of Pu'u Mahoe, the twin cinder cone above Ulupalakua, is an amazing family story. This is Fleming Arboretum, the oldest and largest arboretum for native plants on Maui.
Martha Vockrodt-Moran is the current caretaker, and leads the efforts in caring for rare plants and seed collection for restoration plantings in Auwahi and elsewhere.
Go on a tour with her, and you realize she is also a teller of stories. Her grandfather, D.T. Fleming started this arboretum in 1952. Her mother and father cared for the garden for over 45 years. There are layers of history on the paths between the trees. The legacy sprouts in growing splendor.
